The Way Down

our thoughts on life outside in the cities we love

Entrepreneurs Outdoors: Rachel + Joe of Yellowleaf

This week we caught up with Rachel and Joe of Yellowleaf Hammocks.

Their motto in both business and life: Do good and relax. In addition to sustainable social change, they believe passionately in travelnaps, good food, great friendslong talks, broadened horizons + a spirit of adventure. They are also 100% positive the world would be a better place if everyone spent 15 minutes a day in a hammock. I have to agree.

What city do you live in? What keeps you there?
We live in San Francisco. The exciting thing about living here is that you have a world-class, cosmopolitan city filled with culture and interesting people -- plus, within 45 minutes you can be on a hundred hiking trails, beaches and adventures.

Where do you go to find inspiration for your work/craft?
Travel is the biggest inspiration behind our brand. Every hammock is inspired by a favorite vacation destination and we believe in constantly broadening your horizons! It's more important than ever to have a global outlook and appreciate other cultures (especially other countries' attitudes toward leisure and relaxation!).

We both grew up on the ocean so that is a big part of our lives - whether it's a hike along the pacific ocean by where we live now, sailing on Lake Michigan (from our Chicago days) to this one on the Andaman Sea in Thailand, we love spending time on or in the water!

This is a shot from the Andaman Sea in Thailand, where we befriended an old sea gypsy while island-hopping. He hand-built this yacht and sailed it across the world for 5 years, until he decided to settle on this island! He had some stories...

What’s one place or activity on your outdoor bucket list?
We have been talking for years about trekking through Patagonia! Dying to hike the Perito Moreno Glacier and see the penguins on Punta Tombo.
